First Congregational Church, 3rd Avenue, Anoka

"In 2006, our church was damaged in a severe hailstorm and required a new roof.
Several contractors were invited to survey the damage and make recommendations.
Mr. Austad was by far the most knowledgeable of the group. Especially when it came to areas of the roof where, in his words, it was designed to leak. Indeed, during the previous 10 years, no fewer than 3 other companies had tried to fix leaks in the roof and failed.

Mr. Austad worked with the insurance adjuster to make sure all of the necessary items were included in the claim. He persevered, and all of the necessary steps were taken to insure that the new roof would have the longest life possible. He also recommended another company to replace the copper sheeting on the steeple.

Before work began, Mr. Austad made sure the flat roof adjacent to the pitched roof was protected from damage, and the crew working on the project was aware of the
potential for damage to adjacent structures. During the project, worker safety was
stressed by the project foreman because of the steep roof.

Mr. Austad suggested adding additional insulation to the sanctuary roof to improve
energy efficiency at the time the roofing project was being done. His plan added, I believe, an R-Value of 11 or 12 to the roof, which had an existing R-Value of 4 or 5.
This added insulation has made the church warmer in winter and cooler in the
summer, and has reduced our energy consumption. The plan implemented for adding the insulation was efficient, included a ventilation space for the roof, which did not exist previously, and did not alter the overall appearance of the roof. The ventilation should also improve the life span of the shingles.

The clean up after a job of this scope is important, and the crews did an outstanding
job in this respect.

ln 2007, the church experienced water leakage in the bell tower, which was an area
not covered by the other roofing job. We contacted Austad Construction, and Mr.
Austad again provided an innovative solution to the problem which should not recur as long as the building stands. The innovation extends to some of the masonry which had deteriorated, and is not completely covered.
